3-Day Training for the Justice Alliance Against Gender-based Violence supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives: 8 – 10 Mar 2024

Who would have thought we would come this far! SHero’s pro bono lawyers and case managers joined hands with young, aspiring law enforcement officers and prosecutors to discuss gender justice, build solutions for GBV survivors, and work towards a survivor-centered justice system. The SHero Gender-based Violence Community of Practice now includes police and prosecutors on its board!

From 8-10 March, SHero conducted a 3-day training for the Justice Alliance Against Gender-based Violence supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives. This training included gender and power analysis, intersectionality, survivor-centered approaches, and trauma-informed care through mock case conferences on challenging cases faced in real life. On the last day, the SHero team also introduced Non-violent Communication to find ways towards better collaboration with law enforcement and other actors.

Most participants expressed high levels of satisfaction with the training. Law enforcement officers mentioned that they had never experienced such interactive and activity-based learning, which made capacity building very engaging. Many participants wished for more time to delve deeper into key learnings, such as best practices in securing protective orders for GBV survivors.
Our team worked hard to facilitate the best learning, participatory, and safe environment for our community of practice. We look forward to more resources and opportunities to strengthen our network, building more SHeroes, heroes, and changemakers towards a violence-free society and a just system.
